SotDL- Faith and Blood

The Taint of Demons

The team went their own waya after their first adventure.

Kit got in trouble whilst pickpocketing in Crossings. He accidentally touched iron, and revealed his changeling form. A woman named Henrietta Ravensdotter saw, and knowing how useful a changeling could be for her business, bribed the victim to save Kit. In return, he had to pay his debt to her as a spy, mostly learning gossip for her. As a final task, she asked him to steal a secret paper, which indicated that Grand Burgher Von Straufen was involved in some kind of corruption. This paid off Kit’s debt, but he agreed to continue working. As a reward, he was given a scimitar.

Randir went to the Iron Peak mountains and found Dulfur Goldenlocks. He helped Dulfur clear out an abandoned fortress and restore its Hall of the Ancestors. Dulfur taught Randir how to commune with the spirits. He sensed that the spirits were unhappy with Randir, and helped absolve him of his sin of theft. Randir was given an ancestral battleaxe and was sent on his way.

Tomin went to the shrine, but found no enlightenment. Frustrated, he continued walking until he came to the cottage of Yena. Unaware of who she was, he was given board, and helped renovate her rotting cottage door as thanks. Yena sensed that he had come to some acceptance from this act of labor, and revealed herself as a priestess of the Old Faith. She agreed to teach him the ways of the World Mother, and gave him her staff. She told him about a town called Ephram’s Fork, which was being troubled by a plague. She told him to get there and help in any way he could.

Randir went to Crossings, resolving himself to enjoy his life, when he could have sworn he saw Kit. He gave chase, but lost him in an alleyway. As he emerged, he saw his old friend Tomin Welsh, being discreet in the city. They had a joyful reunion, which Kit eventually joined when he revealed himself. They went to a pub and had a nice pint to catch up. Tomin told them his intentions of going to Ephram’s Fork to aid a plague that was spreading there, and the others agreed to join him.

The group arrived at Ephram’s Fork, and quickly realised that there was something suspicious about the food, it could be related to the Taint. Their suspicions moved over several town members. They met a healer of the New God namedGarret Marten, who had taken upon himself to see to the sick in the town, and he welcomed the help of the new arrivals. Eventually Randir began to feel a little sick himself, after indulging in some pub food. The team got directed to a man named Archibald’s house, where they found him dead inside, choked on his own vomit. They found a love letter to a prostitute at the bath house, where Randir and Tomin went to investigate. After learning of a special ‘milk bath,’ Randir decided to indulge himself with the hooker. Unfortunately for him, this was just when the Taint kicked in, sending vomit and blood everywhere. He was taken to the infirmary, while Kit shapeshifted into another traveller to investigate the milk bath. The prostitute he met had suspicions that it could be the milk, and directed Kit to a dairy farm northwest. Kit and Tomin investigated some old standing stones, and Tomin detected some dread northwest through the standing stones. Kit met a goblin named Snot living in a trash heap near the stones, oblivious to everything.

Randir had healed up a little the next day, and the group made ready for the Golden Meadows farm. They told Garret before they left, and he began testing some samples. When they arrived at the farm, they noticed that the grass was overgrown, and met a suspicious farmer with a strange mark on his neck. They found various demonic sigils around the farm After some confusing events, they incapacitated him and questioned him, before knocking him out and leaving him in the grass. Kit assumed his appearance, and investigated some buildings, finding more ’farmer’s at work for a leader named ‘Beryl.’

They looked around further and eventually found a farmhouse with 2 armed men inside. The group failed to spring a plan where Kit pretended to be a small child, and was dragged into the building. A fight broke out when Randir and Tomin smashed in, and they took down both of the armed men. The group sensed the dread was stronger here, and the floor was pulsing. The group descend a hidden hatch in the floor, to find a horrifying room covered in pulsing living flesh.

At the centre of the room stood a 3m tall fleshy egg, with a woman stood in front of it, breastfeeding it through two fleshy tendrils. She was confused by their talk of milk, but decided they had seen too much. A fight broke out. Tomin lost his eye to a dark spell. Foul toxic breastmilk was fired from the woman’s tits. The egg was destroyed, leaking black bile everywhere. After a grueling battle, the woman was surrounded, and slain by Tomin Welsh, using the end of his staff to gouge out her eye, and then impale her brain. The large egg opened up, and a horrifying half-formed demon emerged, attempting to escape across the room. The team caught up, and collectively slayed the pathetic demonspawn.

The rest of the cultists on the farm fled, after their supposed ‘Prince of Sorrows’ was killed. The group found the Meadows inside tied up. Garret Marten arrived in haste, to tell them of a demonic presence in the dairy. He believed it could make people who have had the taint more susceptible to demonic possession. He told them that dairy must have spread far, to many different villages. The group decide to burn down the farmhouse, along with all of the dairy. There was some debate over what to do with the captured cultists, Garret suggested they hand them to the Inquisition. The group is reluctant, and they decided to burn them there and then. Tomin outs himself as a priest of the Old Faith to Garret, who accepts him with hesitation, stating that the true enemy is the demon lord.

Some days past. Tomin helps at the farm, and sees that the cows return to good health. He also helps them build their new home, and removes the demonic markings from the farm. Garret and the group send out letters to the towns that the dairy was sent to. Garret is heading north to investigate rumours from Highwatch, and will go to as many towns as he can along the way. Kit finds a fortune telling card in his pocket, inviting him back to Crossings for work. The group decide to go to Crossings by wagon with a farmer. On the way, Kit talks more about his identity as a changeling, much to Randir’s suspicion. When he hears elves are involved, he reveal his fiery hatred for the elves. Tomin reveals that he bore a hatred for followers of the New God, but since befriending Garret Marten, has seen that not all followers are bad. The real enemies are the monsters that lurk in the night.

The First Adventure!

The characters met when Kit needed to deliver a message in a neighbouring town. In the crowded marketplace in Crossings, Kit pickpocketed a dwarf named Randir and coaxed him into joining him. Tommin Welsh overheard Randir talking zealously about his faith, and joined the discussion. Eventually Randir got swept into his old ways as a preacher, and started to gather attention from the crowd, including the watchful eyes of the Inquisition. The group decided to get out of there and go have a nice cold pint at The Leaking Bucket Inn. Tommin explained to Randir that other faiths didn’t seem to be very accepted in this city, but that he was travelling to a shrine of the Old Faith not far from there. The two agreed to travel together, and to help Kit on his way to delivering his message. The group rested and left the city at dawn.

After a few days of adventuring, they came across an empty village and some Imperial Soldiers invited them over to their campfire. The soldiers had cooked a pig, and the party enjoyed some merry making until a distraught peasant man came over and wept over his dead pig. The soldiers began to gang up on him, telling him to leave, but Randir’s silver tongue and a few copper coins diffused the situation.

They took the peasant home and found out his name is Offal. He told them that the pigs are magic. The players looked around to find homes with pigs inside instead of people, and came upon the horrifying realisation that the pigs were cursed people. Offal told them how the villagers went to the Hog Hut and the piggy magic got them. They went to the Hog Hut to investigate, where they found a group of bandits outside. The group used a distraction to ambush and pick off some of the bandits, but things took a turn for the worse once they entered the cave. The bandits got the best of the group, and after knocking down Kit and Tommin, they forced Randir to surrender. He told them to take the key, but warned them that the treasure here could be cursed, turning people to pigs.

The bandits and the party used the key to enter the shrine. The walls were engraved with images of a gluttonous and lustful pig god with a love for gold. Statues of the same deity loomed over a large offering bowl. Upon inspection, the bowl was empty. The bandits, seeing that there was no treasure, decided to cut their losses and leave. After trying to talk to a pig, and inspecting the room, the group deduced that the villagers had stolen treasure from the lair, and had been transformed into pigs as punishment.

They made their way back to village, all very injured from their skirmish. They spoke to Offal, who revealed that he had hidden the treasure away. He retrieved it for them, but when the group told him they would leave with the treasure to the shrine, he became suspicious. Things escalated when Randir struck him with the back of his dagger. In the end, they decided to take all of the pigs and the gold to the shrine with Offal.

Upon doing so, all of the pigs transformed back into villagers. They blamed Offal for finding the Hog Hut, and threatened him, before heading out. After collecting a gift from the Pig god, the group set out to continue their journey, taking Offal with them to the next town.
